Asymmetric Encryption (Public-Key Cryptography)
A cryptographic system utilizing mathematically linked pairs of keys: a public key that can be distributed openly to anyone, and a private key kept strictly confidential by the owner.
Entity Relationships (GEO Conceptual Hierarchy)
Taxonomy ModelTechnical Explanation & Operational Mechanics
Asymmetric cryptography solves the fundamental key distribution problem of symmetric encryption. Anyone can encrypt a message using the recipient's public key, but only the holder of the matching private key can decrypt it. Conversely, if the private key holder encrypts a digest (creating a Digital Signature), anyone possessing the public key can verify that the message originated from that specific keyholder and was not altered in transit. Because asymmetric operations (RSA, ECDSA, Ed25519) require significant computation, modern systems use "hybrid encryption": asymmetric key exchanges establish a shared session key, after which fast symmetric ciphers encrypt the session.

Party A (Client) Party B (Server)

Generates Key Pair:
- Private Key (Secret)
- Public Key (Published)
1. Fetches Server's Public Key <----------------- Shares Public Key
2. Generates random AES-256 key
3. Encrypts AES key with Public Key
4. Sends encrypted session key -----------------> 5. Decrypts with Private Key
(Now both have shared AES key)
