Idempotence (HTTP)
A property of certain HTTP methods where executing the exact same request multiple identical times produces the identical server-side state as executing it once.

Taxonomy ModelTechnical Explanation & Operational Mechanics
In the HTTP specification, a request method is considered idempotent if the intended effect on the server of multiple identical requests with that method is the same as the effect for a single such request. Methods like GET, HEAD, PUT, and DELETE are defined as idempotent. For example, deleting a user with "DELETE /users/42" five times results in the user being gone, with no additional side effects. In contrast, POST is non-idempotent: submitting "POST /orders" multiple times will create multiple distinct orders and charge the customer multiple times. Understanding idempotence is essential for designing safe distributed APIs, retry mechanisms, and network fault tolerance.
Technical Example & Practical Implementation
Comparing state modifications across repeated network transmissions
// Scenario A: PUT is Idempotent
// Sending this 1 time or 10 times results in the exact same resource state:
PUT /api/v1/users/42 HTTP/1.1
Content-Type: application/json
{ "status": "active", "tier": "premium" }
// Result: User 42 has status active and tier premium. No duplicates created.
// Scenario B: POST is Non-Idempotent
// Sending this 3 times due to network timeouts:
POST /api/v1/payments HTTP/1.1
Content-Type: application/json
{ "amount": 100, "currency": "USD" }
// Result: 3 separate payment charges created on the payment gateway!Related Topic Ecosystem & Next Steps
